Pretty red...

I'm not much of a "red" person but I like this color of red...it is what I like to call a "blue red".

This is actually marble that has been dyed...I've placed it in a sterling silver bezel, to which I've soldered a U shaped sterling silver bail to the back. Very simple, but eye catching I think!

A matching pair of earrings to compliment the dyed marble pendant.

The stones are set in a sterling silver bezel to which I've soldered sterling silver ear wire.

I rather like this style of earring as it has it's own safety feature...

Something different

When I go to shows/markets I try to come up with something for the younger crowd...such as... stretchy ringed bracelets, leather cord bracelets, age appropriate pendants, or earrings... something simple, while in their price range!

This year I chose feathers for my last few shows and the teenagers liked them...the gorgeous rich jewel colors drew attention!

I'm not a fan of green but I've been drawn to it more and more recently...nice rich green with dyed turquoise dangle...

These are dyed Guinea feathers ...they have been sanitized and the color is permanent, in case you were wondering!

Circles, folding, different!

Below is a variation of one of my earrings styles that I often make... large, small, medium, with a stone, or without, sideways or facing forward like these! They are an everyday "go to" kind of earring made from fine silver ...as you can see this pair have onyx dangles which jazzes them up a bit!

If you are one of those people who prefers consistency these earrings are not for you...I had a number of the turquoise stones that sorta, kinda matched at least in comparison to these two and then there are these two stones, which as hard as I looked I couldn't see them matching in any way. I thought about doing two pendants but then I decide...these would make great earrings because they don't match...I'm a huge fan of the matrix and color difference so I really love these stones.

It was settled, I soldered the bezel to the brushed sterling silver rectangles and set the stones!

Starfish, lapis and scrap!

I managed to take a few photos yesterday on my iPhone...I was at my studio and forgot to bring my camera...it was either go home or give the iPhone a try. I'd taken a few photos with it a few weeks ago so I felt it was worth a try.

You know the iPhone actually takes good photos, in fact all I did to these photos below was crop them! That is amazing...my camera has never taken "great" photos" I always thought it was the operator but now I'm not so sure. With my camera I could take 10 photos, sometimes more, of something before I took a photo I could use...all of these are first shots...while not perfect they are much better than what I usually get from my camera!

My signature starfish...cut out, stamped, brushed finish and tumbled on a sterling silver chain.

As most of you know I'm a fan of cobalt blue...these lapis stones are gorgeous...I only had four stones like this...the first pair of earrings sold so I made these...they could be mine, you just never know? I've always liked this particular style but was a bit unsure of making the ear wires...they actually were not difficult once I sat down and thought about it.

Another "scrap" piece...fine silver fused together.

By the way the starfish came from the east coast...my daughter brought them back for me when she visited there last summer with her family!

Another collage...

I did this collage last week for someone...a bit different from what I usually post. All of these pieces are older and long gone but it is fun sometimes to look back and see how your direction has changed! While silver is the direction I would like to follow, I still work with gemstones, pearls and Swarovski crystals...

My daughter will be arriving shortly to pick me up as we are going to the "23rd Annual Downtown Christmas Walk".
It runs from 6:00pm to 9:00pm on the main street of North Bay, which of course is closed to traffic for the event. There is the lighting of the CIBC Downtown Christmas Tree, Horse & Wagon rides, North Bay Hydro Bucket Rides, the JOY Band, 547 Squadron Cadets, Music throughout downtown, snacks, hot drinks, all the shops decorated for the occasion and best of all friends...hope to see many of you there!
After our walk we are stopping at Cecil's Eatery & Beer Society(corner of Main & Wylde :~)) for dinner...will be great!

I did it again!

Well...what can I say...time flies!!!

I've one more three day show this coming weekend and then I'm done for the year...can you hear me sighing? Well, I am...

I've a few things I want to do for the next little while and if I'm happy with the results I'll do a few posts.

I'm not taken photos for the last few months(which is not a good thing) so I don't have much to show you in the way of new pieces...

This bracelet is one I wear...Just Breathe! Which is how I was feeling this summer... :0)

As many of you know the starfish is part of my logo so I decided to make myself a starfish pendant...this is my first attempt. I wear it all the time and while I've had many compliments I'm looking forward to the day I can use my saw...right now I cut the metal with a pair of shears and that doesn't allow for a great deal of control!

One of my favorite pair of earrings to wear...of course purple, my favorite color! I love the kidney wires as I can wire wrap any color bead I want and I have a new pair of earrings! I made myself a bit longer ones at first but I find I like this length...still a nice dangle but not too long!

Hey there...it's been awhile!

Life will be slowing down for me now, so I'm hoping to be around more....

Tomorrow is the last North Bay Farmers' Market...I can't believe how fast this season has gone. It seems like yesterday I was preparing for the first day! The weather this year was amazing, couldn't ask for better...with a couple of nasty weather bits, like strong winds or mist but certainly the best year weather wise out of the last five. We were disappointed in the lack crowds though...we didn't have the turn out we generally have, I'm thinking everyone was at home or the cottage enjoying the wonderful weather? Regardless...we had a great season...here's to a great Market tomorrow!

Above is a collage I did for a poster for an event ...I think you've seen the pieces individually but I've been playing with making collages, so thought I'd show you this.

Here is something I made a short while ago for a special customer who has became a friend. She wanted a peace sign for her niece, something substantial enough she could wear all her life if she chose to...that would grow with her so to speak.

I made this pendant with 12g fine silver so it is substantial with out being heavy or large...it is the size of a quarter with out the bail...made from 5 pieces of fine silver fused together.

A special pendant for a special niece...

My goal this winter was to learn how to set stones...beginning with pre-made bezel cups and working towards making my own bezels. It was a long time coming but in the last few weeks I've been experimenting with pre-made bezels and copper...

pendant is hand crafted from Argentium silver, stone is onyx

This is one of my first attempts at soldering a bezel cup to silver...surprisingly it isn't as easy as it sounds or looks, but then I'm learning so it will get easier. It takes a great deal of pressure, working the sides of the bezel to make it tight around the stone. I'm enjoying the process but I'm not at the stage where I'm ready to make my own bezel yet...I've the bezel wire just in case!

June Birthstone...Pearls

The pearl is one of the most romantic, versatile items of the “gemstone” world…while the pearl is organic it is often called a “gemstone” due to the fact it is a huge part of the gemstone industry.

Pearls are, in my opinion a staple in the making of jewelry. They can be worn with your favorite jeans, or your wedding gown and everything in between. A single strand pearl necklace or pair of pearl earrings is a wonderful timeless addition to any jewelry box! For those of you who know me you know this is one of my favorite "beads" to use in making jewelry...

It is almost impossible to tell the difference between natural and cultured pearls, one way is the natural pearl will have a low density most pearls over 2.73 in density are cultivated.

Pearls should feel gritty/sandy when you gently rub then against the bottom of your front teeth, if they are smooth they may be fake...although this test isn't completely fool proof.

Rub two pearls together they will feel gritty, if they are smooth the are not real, often glass or coated plastic.

For freshwater pearls only...scrape the surface of the pearl with the end of a pair of scissors, the scrapped area should retain its luster on a real pearl.

Here is one that is more reliable as genuine pearls have overtones in their coloring...place outside in the sun and observe the color...if they are consistently one color they will most likely be fake.

Real pearls will have imperfections and variations of shape and size...fake do not.

Under an ultraviolet light a cultured pearl has a yellow luminescence and under x rays a green one but these techniques are not dependable...

The most reliable method to determine the natural pearl from the cultured pearl is to look inside the pearls. To check the inside structure of the pearl an endoscope is used inside the drilled hole...along with certain types of Xrays. The natural pearl have a concentrically layered structure, while the cultured pearls structure varies depending on the kind of pearl it is.

Pearls come in many sizes and shapes…ranging from the size of a pinhead to the size of a pigeons egg, the largest know being the “Hope Pearl” which is 2inches long and weights 454ct or 90.8grams and is in the South Kensington Museum in London.

All pearls are valued according to their size, shape, color, luster, and the condition of the surface of each pearl…the most valuable shape is round.

The color of the pearl is determined by the type and varies a great deal ranging from white, cream, pink, bronze, black, with overtones of green, blue, dark gray. There are color-enhanced pearls available as well, but care must be taken with some of these as the colors may run if exposed to water.

The pearl is soft…2.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs’s hardness scale, but due to their shape they are difficult to crush.

Natural Pearls

Natural pearls are those which are produced without the help of man…these pearls are formed by saltwater oysters and freshwater mussels…created by a living creature, each pearl is uniquely different in shape, sizes, color and luster.

Interestingly enough the pearl is formed due to an irritant that squeezes inside the shell. Mother of pearl (nacre) is secreted inside the oyster/mussels to form the shell and encrusts all irritants; each encrusted irritant becomes a pearl. Nacre is calcium carbonate and an organic horn substance, (conchiolin) which binds around the irritant. This process is a form of defense for the oysters and mussels.

Cultured Pearls

2.artificially nurtured or grown: cultured bacteria.

Due to the high demand for pearls, the natural supply has been reduced. This has lead to the “cultivation” of pearls by humans; approximately 90% of the total pearls sold come from cultivation farms.

Contrary to what some people believe these pearls are not “faux” pearls they are real pearls formed the same way as natural pearls with some assistance. Basically the process is …a person inserts something into the mollusk forcing it to cover the foreign substance with nacre…a cultured pearl is born! Now having said that there is more to the process but you get the idea.

Like natural pearls, cultured pearl farms are found in both the ocean and freshwater rivers.

There are also pearls produced by snails, Abalone Pearls, which are irregular in shape and a stunning combination of colors including blue, pink, purple, silver and occasionally white. These stunning pearls are rare, an estimate 1 in 50,000 is ever found in the shells…these are cultivated pearls.

Another rare beauty is the Conch Pearl, they are irregular shaped, pink in color with a porcelain look to the finish. These “gems” are found in the “conch” shell, a large snail found in the Caribbean…one of my favorite places to visit!

Care of your Pearls

The life span of pearls can be estimated at 100 to 150 years depending on the quality of the pearls. They are organic, therefore are soft and will scratch easily, they are susceptible to drying out and can become dull, develop fissures or chips. Limit the contact of your pearls to heat, acids, hairspray, perspiration, makeup anything that may damage the surface including metal or other gemstones. Store in an acid free tissue paper or a soft cloth pouch, do not store in a plastic bag, as this will cause condensation to form.

Colors galore...

I made this necklace from glass, quartz and a beautiful citrine wire wrapped pendant back in April, I put it away in my case and waited for my first Market day...it sold early in the day to a very excited lady...

She had me remove the toggle, then add 6 inches of sterling silver chain so the necklace could be worn short or long...a truly versatile necklace to be worn with almost any color/style, dress it up or down!

I'm going to be doing some consignment...I've always stayed away from consignment in the past, there are a couple of reasons but the main reason being, I'm not there to make sure the piece fits properly...or make any necessary adjustments. This necklace is the perfect example...if I wasn't there to adjust the piece the customer would have gone home without her necklace!

I feel things work the way they do for a reason...maybe it is time?

Gotta love rings!

I find rings to be very popular...the only problem for me is to have the right sizes! It is not easy to do...the only rings I have a variety of sizes in is the fine silver stacking rings...like the one below with out the silver ball fused on top...

Here is another style that people seem to like...the Egyptian design...at least that is what I call it!

These are great as they are somewhat adjustable, and can be designed many different ways, textured, smooth, curled ends, flat hammered ends, flattened balls at the end, etc....I think part of the appeal is they are wide and spread over the finger...I have to say I prefer wide rings myself.

The twisted rings are fun to make as I'm guaranteed no two will be the same...just won't happen!

I could make the two rings like the one below but even then the curves would be a different shape and size...

I'm beginning to experiment with setting stones in my rings and pendants...photos to come soon!

May 21st...first North Bay Farmers' Market for the 2011 season!

Someone was watching over us...we had the most perfect day, great conversation with people, many of whom we'd not see since last fall...a gorgeous, sunny, warm 1st Market day...fabulous entertainment...couldn't have asked for a better day!

Our first entertainer of the morning was 11 year old, Rachel Barber...she did a wonderful job and I heard she had a great time...I'm gong to do my best to have her back again during the season...unfortunately I didn't get a photo, but her mother saved the day..this is one Rachel's mother Amy posted on Facebook!

Next we had the great jazz/blues sounds of Tim Beckett and his niece Paige Cipparone...they are amazing performers...Saturday was their first appearance at the Market...a second date is definitly called for!

Early morning...flowers from Spring Hill Farms! Just beautiful of course as many of you know I'm partial to purple everything...

Crowds beginning...we had a great turnout for the first day!

North Bay Farmers' Market begins...

Tomorrow is the opening day for the North Bay Farmers' Market!

For those of you who live in the North Bay and surrounding area here is a bit of information about the Market!

North Bay residents of all ages will soon be able to wander through the booths of local growers of bedding plants and vegetables, producers of baked goods, preserves, jams, jellies, wood products, soaps and unique handmade goods. The 2011 season begins Saturday May 21st, with more than 30 LOCAL vendors. Many of your favorites are returning but come out and see who and what’s new at the Market!

The North Bay Farmers’ Market, in its ninth year, will be open every Saturday 8:30am to 1:00pm – RAIN or SHINE through to Thanksgiving . Once again the Market will be located in the McIntyre St. Parking Lot #11 – across from City Hall (behind TD CanadaTrust on Main St.). There is NO CHARGE to attend the Market and the live entertainment adds a festive flare to the visit. You never know who you’ll bump into that you haven’t seen in ages!

Many exciting things are happening at the North Bay Farmers’ Market this year including the 3rd Annual PANCAKE FESTIVAL which will take place May 28th. Check back for more information next week!

"Birthstone of the Month" Emerald...again

***I've decided to re-publishing my previous "Birthstone of the Month" posts...they were, for the most part well received...I've been contemplating doing a series of post regarding the healing properties of semi-precious stones but thought I would begin by re-publishing these...enjoy! ***

Emerald is the most precious member of the beryl family; the name is derived from the Greek “smaragdos”, which means “green stone”.

The wonderful green color is produced by chromium present in the gemstone. The vibrant color won’t fade, as it is stable regarding light and heat. As with many gemstones the color varies depending on the source or the location the gemstone was found. Apparently the most favorable color is a strong slightly bluish green.

Colombian emeralds are a pure green with a slight tint of blue. There are significant deposits, especially in the Muzo mine northwest of Bogotá.

This magnificent emerald was mined in Colombia, set in white gold, with yellow gold claws, encased in diamonds...what more could you ask for ladies!!!

A 60 carat Colombian emerald set with approximately 25 carats of diamonds on yellow gold. Market value US$240,000

Brazilian emeralds are a slightly lighter color of green with more yellow noticeable, often slightly cloudy, but most often without inclusions. Deposits have been found in Bahia, Goias, and Minas Gerais and while relatively new deposits, discovered since the 1980s, Brazil has become one of the most important suppliers of emeralds!

From Northeast Brazil...A fully terminated, semi-gemmy Emerald crystal...Measures about 1/2" across...semi-gemmy means "clear in spots but not completely"

Zambian emeralds have good clarity are are a deep green. Other deposits have been found in Russia, Afghanistan, Australia, Ghana, India, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Tanzania, Vietnam, China and the United States.
These lovely emerald crystals are from Wenshan, near Kunming, Yunnan Province, China
Here is a natural, grass green Emerald (Beryl) crystal from the Lao Cai Province of Vietnam
Famous Emeralds can be found at the British Museum of Natural History in London, England, the American Museum of Natural History in New York, in the treasury of Russian, in the state treasury of Iran, in the Treasury room in Topkapi Palace, Istanbul, Turkey and in the Viennese treasury in a vase is a gem 4 ¾ in (12cm) high, weighing 2205cts, cut from a single emerald crystal.

Most emeralds are not clean, having some imperfections such as cloudy, cracks, inclusions of fiber, tremolite rods, some of which make the emerald sensitive to pressure…hence the emerald cut was designed to maximize the color while the rounded corners help to minimize chipping and breaking of the corners.

It is common for emeralds to be dipped in a specific type of oil or sometimes prepared with an artificial resin in a vacuum if they have hairline fractures or other faults…this is usually done in the country of origin. The FTC in the United
States requires a disclosure of this kind of treatment.

While not my favorite gemstone I have to admit these lovely gems have grown on me…a nice set of emerald earrings or perhaps a bracelet would be nice…what do you think???

Earrings...

These are kind of cute, very tiny though...only 10mm long! They look a little crooked...the bangle they are resting on is a bit slanted on the starfish...I actually just checked them out as I thought the ear wires might have been off. I always make at least four at a time so there shouldn't be any difference but you never know...

Again...these were cut from scrap silver then 4 pieces of sterling silver was soldered onto each...

More scrap pieces...before I began doing this I would have cut a piece of silver from the larger sheet for this...not sure why I didn't start doing this earlier? The curly Q's are small pieces of fine silver fused on the rectangle.

The elongate diamond shape was cut from my sheet silver...to which was soldered the left over silver wire pieces...
I am please with the recycling aspect of making these pieces but the fact they allow for one of a kind jewelry makes it even more appealing to me...besides it is fun searching around in my boxes of metal for just the right piece to work...

These two pieces were done a while ago but I hadn't taken the time to photograph them...I'm not happy with the lighting here so I put off taking pictures...won't be long now before I move...the end of June, hopefully the lighting will be better suited to taking photos!

As you can see this was four pieces of scrap silver that I soldered together with a horse shoe bail...sort of...if you look closely that is what it looks like?

This was a piece of silver left over from something else that was cut out and I liked the shape so I punched two holes in it and soldered on all kinds of little scrap pieces...fun to do!

I'm a huge fan of pearls, traditional cream or white, yes, but I just love the multi- colored pearls available...last fall I did a post including Artbeads.com pearls and Pantone 2010 Fall Colors in the same sentence. It was very exciting to look over the "new" colors such as Endive, Golden Glow, Living Coral, Lipstick Red, Purple Orchid, Chocolate Truffle, Lagoon, Oyster Gray, to name a few...aren't they delicious names?

It is funny because as soon as I saw all the gorgeous colors I decided to look for pearls that would be in the same family...while I didn't find all the colors in one strand I found enough to satisfy myself.
You might remember I chose two gorgeous strands of multi-colored pearls along with a delicate sterling silver hook clasp and leaf link. Below is a better look at the beautiful silver items.
I new right away what I wanted to make...something simple, elegant and classy!

...there are 6 strands of pearls at the front, light but still substantial in appearance, I'm always conscious of weight when it comes to a necklace...I attached the strands with sterling silver ends...on one side, the leaf link and the other the hook clasp situated so both should be visible when the necklace is worn; I try not to hide such beautiful clasps and connectors when ever possible...the back is a solid strand of pearls.

I was trying to show something of the back of the piece, while still showing the front...rather hard with this necklace...below a close up of the clasp.
I loved these pearls so much I ended up buying more and made myself a triple strand necklace...I wear it constantly!

The beginnings of organiztion

Tomorrow I will be a vendor at the Powassan 14th Annual Maple Syrup Festival, in the community of Powassan, so this morning I'm beginning my organization/pack-up. This year the organizers offered space inside the Sportsplex so I jumped at the opportunity...the weather this time of the year can be so iffy! I have to say I'm so happy I did as the forecast is not good...I sure hope the weather forecast is wrong...otherwise the outside vendors are in for an unpleasant day!!!

"Cloudy. Snow beginning in the morning changing to wet snow mixed with rain and then to rain late in the afternoon. Snowfall amount 2 to 4 cm. Wind southeast 30 km/h gusting to 50. High plus 4".

I've cut back on shows this year, I actually started last fall, besides I'm in the finishing stages of a major renovation and it is taking up a great deal of time...not to mention emotions.

This is the first of my shows this season, (I missed all my Sudbury friends this year)...so everything is in a bit of a mess, time to go through it!
Thought I would let you see what I was up to this morning...

There is paper, jewelry, bags, tissue, etc., cluttered around right now...for some reason I seem to work in these kinds of conditions...not sure what it is?

My pretty organza bags, boxes, bags, not sure where my tissue is and a hand held mirror on the side...

In the past I've used hand held mirrors partly because I couldn't seem to find what I was looking for and partly because I do a great many out door shows/markets and I was always afraid the mirror would get blown over...which it definitly would have in some of the weather we've been in. Having said that I've managed to break 2 hand mirrors...I'm hoping the second mirror negates the first in the bad luck department? :0) I found this mirror the other day and decided, go for it...it is difficult to tell in the photo but it is just the right size for sitting on the table.

The some of the "girls" as my daughter calls them...

Enough...time to go get things under control!

Precious metal

This winter I was planning to spend as much time as possible working with silver, be it argentium, sterling or fine silver...love it all! Well that didn't happen nearly as often as I would have liked, not for lack of wanting to though...

Below is fine silver links fused together and linked with sterling silver rings, I've added two tiny stamped argentium silver circles,one with my signature starfish and the other with two butterflies. Finished with a hand crafted hook...

I've had a bit of a thing for circles lately...here we have three argentium silver circles randomly soldered to a larger lightly hammered argentium silver circle.

Argentium silver rectangles hammered in two directions...domed slightly... three balls each made from my scrap pile of silver, soldered to the rectangles, hanging of course from my own ear wires.

There is something new on the market... in January, Pearl from the Beading Gems Journal did an interesting post on "silver filled" wire...basically the same idea as gold filled. I've ordered some of the wire from Fire Mountain Gems...they are saying it handles like silver, can be hammered and soldered. Once I've had a chance to work with it I'll let you know what I think.

Hello...

As you might have noticed...I've been away since the beginning of February...I've spent the last little while since my return catching up on boring issues!

I've finally made it back to my blog...

Last fall my Mother happened to see a onyx and black swarovski dangle bracelet that I was wearing(love dangles) and she thought she would like one in brown...she loves brown over black. So when I went to see her this winter I brought her this brown pearl & swarovski, sterling silver bracelet...she rarely ever asks for anything so when she does I'm on it!

She loved it but, has arthritis in her hands and found the claw too difficult...I used this swivel claw as I thought it might work well for her but it didn't so I changed the claw to a magnetic clasp and safety chain...I checked out a local bead store and found a nice strong clasp...I've not had a great deal of luck finding strong magnetic clasps lately. I order them online and I'm often disappointed in the strength when they arrive. If anyone can recommend where I can purchase strong magnetic clasps I appreciate it!

I'm an earring and bracelet person...without either I don't feel properly dressed when I go out...and I'm also one of those who likes my earrings to coordinate with something I'm wearing. (I know, I know, but I do) I decided rather than bring my whole earring collection I would bring one of my favorite pair of sterling silver earrings, they go with almost anything...I then made a pair of long kidney wires, after which I wire wrapped Bali beads, white, dark pink & lime green pearls, onyx, dyed purple & magenta jade, denim something or other, I forget the stone and sodalite...these are colors I wear most often/packed.
Worked for me...simplified the earring packing...now all I have to do is simplify the close issue!!!!

Left overs!

This fall I received copper and stoneware products from ArtBeads.com from which I made a necklace, scroll way down...this is the left over product...because there was so much left I felt I should make something else with the pieces...here you have it! I couldn't seem to get this style out of my mind...sometimes you just have to go with it!

The three gorgeous stoneware beads have been wire wrapped with copper plated metal wire to each diamond, oval and circle link and the copper plated metal chain. I've added a few of my turquoise oval beads to continue the southern feel. Love turquoise...I have a difficult time staying away from it when I use copper...turquoise and copper feel right to me!

I'm very impressed with the stoneware beads they are substantial without being heavy and the color is consistent and vibrant. Love the copper/plated products...well made! I wanted to mention this as I've purchased stoneware beads and copper else where and I've not been happy with the quality of the product...you will find these are definitly a quality product.

13.5% duty added!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but we need to be informed...

Check out this excerpt from Artbeads.com's blog...regarding the addition of 13.5% duty to all Bali & Hill Tribe silver products as of January 1st, 2011!

"Chief Operating Officer, Michael Hervieux.

Since 1976 the U.S. Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) has been in place to promote economic growth in under-developed nations by offering duty-free entry into the US for a large number of products including, among others, Bali and Hill Tribe Silver. The federal government is required to continually reassess and reauthorize this program in order to keep it in place and over the years has let it lapse several times only to pick it up once again. Unfortunately, this program was most recently only authorized until December 31, 2010 so effective January 1, 2011 all imports of products previously covered by the GSP have been levied at the standard duty rates that are as high as 13.5%. There is no estimated date for when the GSP will be renewed or if it will even happen. Sadly, Artbeads finds itself with little choice but to raise the prices on these items to help cover this new cost. (These prices will be rolled out in the next few days so now would be a good time to stock up!)

As always Artbeads strives to be as open as possible about outside influences on prices. Over the course of the last year the sterling silver market has been highly volatile and has forced us to move our prices up significantly. However, when the silver market declines our prices have likewise been adjusted accordingly. As soon as we learn if and when the GSP will be renewed we will be sure to keep you advised and will roll back our prices accordingly.

My version of recycling silver!

This has been a difficult year with the price of silver...it is now up to $29.37 an oz. I guess I shouldn't complain gold is $1,381.50 an oz....a considerable difference, but then it is relevant to each designers metal of choice and customer preference!

Yesterday a blogging friend, Pearl, from The Beading Gem's Journal, did a post on the price of silver and an interesting alternative...silver filled wire. I'm sure most of you are familiar with gold filled as I was but that was the first time I'd hear of silver filled wire...take a peak at her post it is very informative. I checked around for information to see if I could find any more information but haven't been successful so far...I'll keep looking and will post when I find info on this product.

I've been keeping an eye on the price of silver since the summer and have been somewhat frustrated with the rise in the cost of silver... so as you may have noticed in a previous posts I showed a pair of circle earrings to which I soldered scrap sterling silver pieces...I've been making earrings, pendants & rings since the fall and have found them to be well received.

Customers like the originality of each piece as well as the idea they are recycling silver. I've also been using larger pieces of scrap silver and soldering them together to make pendants...I don't have any photos but when I do I'll post them.

As you can see I've a new header...I found a great tutorial on making Blog headers with Picasa. I've been using Picasa for some time now to edit my photos so this was perfect for me!

In the last two years this is the third bracelet of this kind I've made...notice I said third... The first was to try something different with beading...while I love the results the actual process is somewhat like "work", and you know how I feel about work. I need my glasses plus a magnifying glass to make this. Seriously!!! When finished the bracelet is stunning...a bit heavy but colorful and vibrant...the first was done in greens the second was done similiar to this but with pearls included in the mix. Having said that, I've the stones, etc., (completely different combos) to make two more...won't promise when they will be done... lets say...sometime in the future! This one I made with multi colored flourite(purple, yellow, pale blue) oval stones, tiny seed beads, they are difficult to see, they are hiding in the center as they are the back bone of the bracelet and a multitude of gorgeous faceted amethyst rondelles which ranged in color from dark amethyst (my favorite) to pale amethyst verging on yellow(citrine)...if you look closely you can spot a few of the yellow... This bracelet was custom ordered as a Christmas gift...I'm hoping she loves it!!!

I've been making this type of earring for some time...I don't do the shiny finish a great deal (in all honesty they aren't as popular as the textured/hammered/brushed finish) but they certainly are pretty to look at...all smooth and shiny!!!

Being so shiny it makes for taking photos rather difficult...

I've been doing soldering and fusing for awhile...I don't have any photos of my latest pieces yet, they are coming, but here is a sample of earrings I did about a month ago... I prefer abstract and like the fact people know they are handcrafted...so I tried soldering scrap silver, and pieces I've made into scrap, onto in this case, argentium silver circles, no two will ever be exactly the same but it works...

I like the results and have made many earrings and pendants, in all kinds of shapes/sizes/designs...

Pie Crusting Pendant

I've been doing a bit of experimentation lately, trying to see what direction I going in the future...I've been doing some fusing, soldering, wire wrapping, glass pendants...trying techniques I've not considered or had the time to try before. I've decided if I don't make the time I won't grow as a designer. Which would be fine if that was the direction I chose, but I love to learn so I'm jumping in with both feet...we'll see how I make out!

In August I found this amazing tutorial by Rosamond Bain..."Pie Crusting Pendant".
I looked it over then filed the tutorial away as a "possibly in the future", I found it again a few weeks ago and thought I would see what I could come up with. The tutorial is well done, easy to read instructions, with great photos...this is a great technique tutorial while allowing for artistic interpretation, detail and design.

These two pendants are made with 26g. argentium silver sheet, with coral, and turquoise stones.

I used considerably more metal than is probably necessary and curled around the edges a great deal more as I was nervous about the stones falling out, this also prevented the stone from moving around...I know more experience in folding the metal to prevent movement is what will do the trick in securing the stone. Eventually I will try another with less metal to show the stones more and see what happens! :0) None the less, I enjoyed making the pendants...

Thanks to Rosamond Bain for the great tutorial, it was fun to see the pendant emerge from a piece of sheet silver. It also made me realize I have to think out side the box!

I was asked to do something "Christmasy" a few weeks ago...my first thought was simple as there is so much in the way of decoration/adornment at this time of the year...this is what I decided upon. I've done "love" and "believe"as well as a few letters in copper wire but never sterling silver wire...these are fun to do...a little slow going but fun none the less!

More photos to come...I'm having a difficult time getting the light just right...as you can see from this photo!

Centering header done!

Well that was simple...I just checked out the link my friend Mei left me and found the fix in about 10 minutes...

I would like to extend a heart felt "thank you" to those wonderful people who attended my 2nd Annual "Silver Christmas" show...you made the evening a grand success!!! Your show of appreciation makes me want to work harder, learn more!!!

I brought my camera but forgot to take photos...nothing new as I often forget! The set up was the same as last year...only the jewelry was different...of course... :0)
I will have time to put photos of my pieces up here...soon.

In the next few weeks I will be concentrating on orders but once they are done I will be setting my sights on updating my website and Etsy shop...both sorely neglected since May! I'm still trying to find a good light source here...not having much luck...but then the weather has been very gloomy which doesn't help. I find cloudy days work fine but not the dark dreary days...the pieces loose their sparkle! I'll keep at it...

I was trying to put up my Christmas background but I'm having issues so will work on it a bit later...

Time passes so quickly...this weekend is the last of my "craft shows" for the 2010 season...a three day show! Very busy but a great deal of fun! For those of you in the North Bay area stop by...it is a fabulous show with amazing artisans/crafters/producers!

Don't you just love pearls...they are one of my favorite beads...classy and elegant but fun when you want them to be...truly versatile! I've done a single strand of graduated pearls to a multi strand long necklace and everything in between. Take a look at what I've got this time from ArtBeads.com ...the most gorgeous multicolored strand of pearls...two actually...the colors are so vibrant!

I was sent the Pantone color report for fall 2010 and the first page shows all the exciting new colors for fall...check out them out they are definitly colors I would choose personally!

After looking through the report I chose these two strands of pearls from ArtBeads.com...while I couldn't get something close to the Lipstick Red or the Golden Glow I thought this strand was complementary to the rest of the stunning colors!!!

I also chose a sterling silver leaf link and an elegant sterling silver hook and eye clasp...these are delicate but still a nice substantial weight to them, perfect for pearls.

As soon as I saw the pearls I knew exactly what I wanted to make...something classy & elegant but fun...

Almost everything copper!

I bet you thought I forgot...yes & no, kind of, not really, you get the picture!!!

Here are the gorgeous copper components from Artbeads.com I received the end of April...I can't believe it has been that long...gotta love that company for their patience!

It took awhile bit I've finally finished the necklace...I started wire wrapping the turquoise rice beads to the circles probably back in June, but put it away when I moved and there it sat until last Friday...only took a short while to complete!

As you see below...I started with the three 32mm copper plated pewter circle links, I wire wrapped turquoise rice beads I had in my stash, to the links...then wire wrapped the gorgeous double star, attached the square & oval links spacing them with the same turquoise rice beads...then attached everything to the copper plated metal chain...this is really nice sturdy chain, I was very pleased with it. All the copper pieces are good quality, with a substantial feel to them, you won't be disappointed!

The necklace that emerged is not what I had in mind...things often happen that way, I went with the idea regardless!

I've used everything but one each, of the square and oval links and the three pretty stoneware beads...I also have some of the chain left...I'm going to make a second necklace with what is left...soon!!!

Hello everyone...it has been a while!

As you know I've moved into a rental house and I'm renovating my new home...as was expected it is a painfully slow process, which is why we are renting. For the last 34 years we renovated while living in the house, and I'm talking major renovations over the years..I'm too old and just not in the mood to do that again!

Crazy Buzy!!!

As the title says I've been "crazy busy" & I will be for the next couple of months as I'm moving!

The first Market day went well....hot, sunny, great entertainment & a good crowd for a long weekend, fun was had by all! The only negative was I had a necklace stolen!!! I didn't get any photos last week...I actually forgot!

Yesterday was another wonderful Market day, two warm sunny Market days in a row, so perfect. Our yearly Pancake Festival was very well received, we had huge crowds of people at the Market yesterday. Unfortunately I had another necklace stolen and another vendor had her cash box stolen($500.00)...I was not happy last week, but this Saturday I was down right angry!!!! We contacted the police but we don't hold any hope in anything being returned or the perpetrators being caught...having said that the Police department needs to be aware...we plan on checking into what we can do about having a police presence at the Market once or twice during the day!

On a happier note here are a few photos I managed to take yesterday...

In the booth next to me was an occasional vendor, a great lady by the name of Claudette Jesso, (not in the photo)...she makes fabulous bags from upholstery fabric, some with a bit of bling for added character...you can see the fellow holding up two! :0) Claudette also makes wonderful baby quilts and cute long eared bunnies!

If you look very carefully, depending on how good your eyes are...:0) there is a sign on the left hand side, hanging from the blue tent which says "Pancakes $1.00"...there was a long line most of the Market day with people waiting to enjoying tasty pancakes drizzled with delicious Mathews Maple Syrup... a heartfelt thank you to the folks from Mathews Maple Syrup a local producer & one of our vendors for making the pancakes & supplying the syrup! Well done!!!

I didn't get photos of the Buskers, but they are somewhere in the sea of people above!!! A young fellow by the name of Aidan entertained us with his violin skills first thing followed by the Celtic sounds of Stack of Barley...I enjoy the festive feel the Buskers bring to the Market!

All things considered it was truly a great day!!! Looking forward to next Saturday...

This Saturday May 22nd, is the opening of the North Bay Downtown Farmers' Market!!! I felt the excitement when I spoke with a few of the 33 vendors who are busy preparing for the big day...I know the customers are anticipating! Won't be long now...we will have, limited vegetables, plants, herbs, potted flowers, baking, health & beauty products, jams & jellies, weaving & knitting, eco-friendly products, jewelry, cards, maple syrup, honey, meat, wood crafts, flower arrangements, candles...all manner of unique hand made goods!!!
Beginning May 22nd, the Market will be open very Saturday 8:30am to 1:00pm, RAIN or SHINE until October 9th, at the McIntyre Street parking lot between City Hall and TD Canada Trust on Main Street.
Don't forget...when you buy drinks or snacks from the North Bay Downtown Farmers' Market Booth you will be helping to make the possibility of a permanent home a reality as all the proceeds go towards this endeavor!
Local resident Derek Morin, (musician/singer) will be at the Market to entertain on opening day...Derek recently produced his first DC!

Last December a friend of mine was kind enough to do a guest post featuring my Heart and Stroke jewelry series!

The creator of Crystal Allure jewelry, Stephanie, sent me a lovely "Designs Featured Banner" to put on my side bar...take a few minutes to visit her as she features her gorgeous hand crafted jewelry on her blog "Behind The Design" as well as her website. Stephanie also makes awareness jewelry "Animal Awareness", "Cystic Fibrosis Awareness" and "Transplant Awareness"...

As many of you know, I make pendants such as the "Broken Heart" from sterling silver, sometimes I stamp messages on the pendant or sometimes I "mend" the hearts like this one ...I also make heart shaped earrings with wire...

Great Etsy artists pendants are fun to use in my pieces!

Heart shaped semi precious stones are always make great necklaces & earrings!

As I mentioned to Stephanie...the reason I make this series is simple...heart disease has touched my life!!! When something I make includes a heart as part of the design, sells, I make a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. I've been doing this since December 2008. I feel there isn't enough understanding of just how "deadly" heart disease is... unfortunately it isn't taken seriously until it is too late!!!

Great show last night... I want to say "thank you" to everyone who stopped by & helped make the evening a huge success!!! As some of you will know I won't be doing another one of these shows until the fall...my previous commitments, (shows/markets) have to come first!

A heart felt thank you to those who've made all three shows this winter a huge success!

Personally I love copper...I don't use it often as I've found my customers aren't great fans of this particular look/metal...I couldn't resist it for my choice in the Artbeads.com "Beauty of Spring" design campaign though!!!

I was very excited when this parcel arrived yesterday...it generally takes about three weeks and I'm always watching for the package to arrive!!!

One of the reasons I was so excited is because of the gorgeous double star pendant, this is truly a stunner 43m x 43m...this hand-crafted copper beauty is made in the USA!!! Great color variation, wonderful hand-crafted feel to it!!!

These 32mm, copper plated pewter circle links are beautiful...the photo on Artbeads.com doesn't do them justice!

How about these great square links...again copper plated pewter, 23mm sq... I love the new pewter items...

Can't be without oval copper plated pewter links, now can I?...18m x 12m

Gotta love this chain...nice detail, classy but still fun...copper plated over metal

Aren't these pretty? I loved them right away... hand-crafted stoneware clay tubes. Artbeads.com also has solid colors but I thought these said spring nicely, with green, yellow, orange, tan and delicate blue... definitly spring to me!

Of course my group photo...I do have to mention the star is not as dark as it looks in this photo...the first photo is an accurate color!

I must say I'm very happy with all these beads, they are all well made, nice intricate detail... lovely to look at.
I've been using silver plated pewter beads a great deal in the past year but this will be my first time using copper plated pewter beads of any kind..I'm looking forward to using the links in my piece!

I'm sure by now everyone has heard of the fabulous new book out by Lisa Crone..."A Bead in Time". The book is a must read for anyone who is passionate about jewelry designing, or for someone who would like to learn but isn't sure where to begin!!!

If you haven't already take the time to check out Lisa's blog, A Bead A Day, you can count on Lisa to post unique & colorful beads/creations, interesting tips or simply help if needed.

When I heard about the book I immediately pre-ordered it on Amazon.ca. To say the lease I was thrilled when my book arrived.

Lisa has out done her self with her book...this is a marvelous look into her life experiences as well as her vivid imagination! The inspiration for each project comes from something that has left an impression on Lisa...be it something as simple as tinsel on a Christmas tree, chocolate, a wrought iron fence or something as complex as the Golden Gate Bridge...she brought all to life with the perfect combination of color and style!

Did you think I was lost!!!

Life has been a bit busy in the last two weeks... what with the Spring show, a two day trip to Toronto, preparing for a fashion show & a one day show, keeping up with my Market Board work, and last but not least...the possibility of a move after 20 years...I've not had a great deal of time to visit my friends. For that I'm sorry!

I don't have any new jewelry photos but thought I would show these two portraits from the art class I took this winter...this one done with pencil.

This one done with pencil then paint over top...never did like this one...did the eyes over 4 times and then just left them like this because I couldn't get them the way I wanted them!!! Never did finish the nose or the mouth either. While I'm not thrilled with the face parts, I was somewhat happy with the shading I managed to do with the paints...which is what the lesson was about...

I'm not a portrait painter, never will be, but that is fine, I didn't take the course for that reason...I found I liked my face parts when I did them by themselves but when I put everything together I couldn't seem to make them work, I know it takes practice, but I think I would rather practice drawing & painting something else, :0). Regardless this was a great class with Misty Mawn, she is a wonderful teacher...I learned a great deal about drawing & shading, which is what I was hoping for. I would definitly take another class with her!

I'm hoping to have a few "bright" days shortly so I can take some jewelry photos, not today though, we are having freezing rain...can't complain as our weather since the beginning of March has been amazing! I will be patient and wait as I've learned the photos are so much better on a nice bright day!

I've a three day show this Friday, Saturday & Sunday so I may not be visiting much until Monday or Tuesday of next week...so I decided to leave you with a few photos...

This shot was taken between London & Toronto on our return trip in March...I couldn't get over all the power lines... these go on for miles & miles...I had to take a photo!!! A number of times when we've gone through it has been dark so I didn't get the true impact of all these lines...

How about this for a "concrete jungle"... 4 highways above us!!! This is in the Toronto area...

This was Sunday evening...I was sitting at my desk, didn't notice the sun setting until I looked up and there it was...I grabbed my camera and raced upstairs, as this is where I get the best unobstructed shots...

Getting there...

I'm slowly getting back into the "swing" of things...there is always a great deal to catch up with after being away. I've also my first spring show March 26th, 27th & 28th, in Sudbury to prepare for.

I haven't posted any pieces lately so I thought it was time...this is the bracelet and earrings Diane Estrella is giving away on her blog...there is still time to put your name in...

My daughter, grandson & Jade dropped in on Monday...this is their spring break from school, my daughter is a teachers assistant and Connor is in grade seven. Jade is their newest addition to the family, a 5 month old standard poodle, she such a beautiful gentle dog. You would think it was a human baby the way my daughter treats her... :0)

It was a beautiful sunny day so we took Jade for a walk down to the park near my house...
You will notice in the photos how low the water level is...in the summer it is right up to the break wall of the townhouse complex...our lake is controlled by a dam system, lowering it in fall and sometimes when they can in the spring...which has allowed the lake to stay at a safe level!!!

If you look very closely my house is the white stone on the right, half hidden by the huge gorgeous evergreen...I couldn't come around front as there was too much slush so a side view it is...

This view shows you just how much water the dam released in the fall...my home is in the bay which is on the right of the photo...

Once the lake is completely clear of ice the water slowly rises due to run off in the surrounding areas...we have water a few feet up our break wall in the summer which is a normal level...

We've had a few weeks of very unseasonably warm weather...it is wonderful, could we be so lucky for this to be the start of our spring??? At the risk of sounding like a pessimist we've had snow here at the end of May on occasion...

For the bracelet below all the beads have been wired wrapped with sterling silver wire. I chose large turquoise discs, smaller Mykonos turquoise and brown discs flanked by two of three almost round turquoise lampwork beads by Cindy Gimbrone as well I've also used a beautiful brown & cream barrel lampwork bead by Cindy. I made the clasp with sterling silver wire and the oval pendant is my second attempt at working with Art Clay...I'm patiently waiting for more so I can keep experimenting.

Trip photos...

I'm home...we had a wonderful time... as selfish as it sounds it wasn't long enough!!!

We traveled I75 and luck was with us as we had perfect driving weather all the way...we did hit snow flurries in Kentucky into Tennessee but that is all they were, no accumulation at all!
As some of you may know I forgot my camera at home so I used my son's for a few shots...when I remembered, or something caught my eye...I wasn't into taking photos for some reason???
This sunset is in Georgia...

This shot is rather blurry I know but it shows how little traffic there was in Atlanta...we always drive right through the city, generally cars are bumper to bumper but it was Saturday evening and we were rather surprised at the lack of vehicles!

This is a great shot visually, icicles hanging from the side of blasted rock in Kentucky!

We took a very short trip down to Key West and the next two are photos taken from the van as we were driving...what a beautiful trip that is...all those bridges, the water, the islands. So much to look at along the way!

This is looking down Duval Street, in Key West...what a busy street...shops of all kinds from typical touristy shops to exclusive Artisan shops & everything in between!

One crazy week...and another!!!

Wow...this has been one busy week...so much to do, so little time...as "they" say!!!

I'm feeling as though I can breath a bit easier now, everything is packed up, I'll be leaving to set up in about an hour or so...I've another show this evening...the same idea as the one in December but with a Valentines theme to it. It will be held in the Living Room at Cecils of course...great room, it actually feels as though it could be someones living room!

"update Feb 21st"...the show was great...I wasn't sure how this one would be received but it was better than I expected!! I've decided my next one will be just before Mother's Day...after that not sure as my Markets begin in May and this kind of show takes a great deal of time.

Tomorrow is the Heart & Stroke Foundations "Soups On"...this will be my third year attending this local event...it is always a great time. Each year they add something new, this year there will be a silent auction, mini health fair and of course my table. Local establishments donate, bread, fruit, and veggies, restaurants donate huge pots of soup for people to taste, really a great lunch for $8.00, all proceeds go to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of course.

I've been thinking all week what I want to do with the gorgeous stoneware heart pendant I received from Artbeads.com...I contemplated keeping it for myself...I love it but, I'm not a heart person and I know I would wear it a couple of times and then it would hang on my jewelry display!!! This is a gorgeous pendant and I want someone who would wear it regularly, to have it...

With that thought in mind, I decided to donate it to the silent auction at "Soups On"...for that reason I kept it simple in hopes it would appeal to a greater number of people at the auction...I wire wrapped the pendant with sterling silver and added a large onyx bead & hung it from a silver plated chain.

I'm going to use the sterling silver heart chain for something else but I'm using the sterling silver heart toggle for the stoneware heart pendant.

"update, February 21st...
I ended up being side tracked and wasn't able to finish this post before I left for my trip, as well I forgot my camera at home and didn't have the photos until my daughter-in-law brought it to me when she arrived..."Soups On" was a huge success for the Heart & Stroke Foundation... great soups were enjoyed!!! My son-in-laws restaurant won the "best cream soup" for the third year in a row...way to go Cecils' Eatery & Beer Society!!!

Hearts...

It is that time of year...hearts and more hearts...everywhere you look!!!

In the mail last Friday I received the gorgeous stoneware pendant shown below from Artbeads.com again it isn't your traditional red heart... there is nothing wrong with the traditional red hearts, some are very beautiful... but I thought this one made a great statement!

Also included was this lovely sterling silver heart toggle...I use heart toggles a great deal for my Heart & Stroke Series...that way even if the actual piece doesn't have a heart because the toggle is heart, I will make a donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

This is a very pretty chain...again all hearts, a little more delicate than I was thinking but that is my fault because I didn't pay attention to the sizes of the links, I do that sometimes ...never the less it will work nicely!

Everything together...
I love this heart...I'm torn between doing something detailed or putting it on a simple chain or black leather cord???

Sparkle & Shine!

It took me a while to first of all start this bracelet...in fact I was half done and I left it for about a week. I've been having a creative block when it comes to making jewelry. Which is part of the reason I've been showing so much in the way of my attempts at drawing and my photos! Have to have something to post!

Since early December the only time I made anything new was for custom orders that came in, the Monet Challenge and this bracelet???

I will have to get myself in gear because I have two shows coming up...Feb. 11th "All that glitters" & Feb. 12th the "Soups On" which is a Heart & Stroke Foundation fundraiser! More about that later...

For now I would like to show you my bracelet...remember the beginning of January I did a post about these gorgeous beads from Artbeads.com a mixture of Bali, Hill Tribe, and sterling silver, with the gorgeous Indian Pink & Mocca roundelle Swarovski crystals...not to forget the star toggle. I get side tracked so easily sometimes...when I was cutting and pasting the links I just happened to notice Artbeads.com has a total of 3068 silver beads if you combine them altogether...there are so many to choose from!!!!

I can't say enough how lovely these two new colors are...but then I'm a huge fan of all shades of browns, as I mentioned the Indian Pink has a slight hint of purple which sold me right away!!!

I have to tell you I tried 4 times to lay this bracelet out to take an interesting shot and show off the detail...I think sometimes I try too hard... finally I picked it up from both ends and let it go and voila...there you have it, so I left it that way!

This is definitly a "me" bracelet as I often wear bracelets with dangles...the movement appeals to me...

Snow, sky, jewels, & faces!

I thought to be fair I should show you a photo of my view with snow and ice..it actually looks rather barren at this time of the year!

Here is my first full face...while I enjoyed the process, I had a difficult time with the complete face...couldn't seem to get the facial features gelling together! This was done with HB, HB2, HB4, blending stump & eraser of course...

I made the necklace below for a bead challenge on ArtBead Scene.com. The piece was to be inspired "La Pie" by Monet...the following gorgeous winter scene.

In keeping with the winter white and neutrals I chose citrine, crazy lace agate, fossil coral, brass chain, white base metal chain, and silver plated wire. The five white and sand beads on the right are gorgeous polymer clay beads made by Artybecca. Each week for the month of January one designer is chose for the "Designer of the week"... I was thrilled to be chosen from amongst a wonderful group of designers on Monday January 18th, you can find the post here...

Another shot of my view..I loved the cloud formation..I enjoy watching the cloud patterns...doesn't take much to amuse me!!!

This is my second attempt at a face...done with a Stabilo pencil and titanium white paint, certainly won't be a favorite of mine! That is all I'm going to say about this piece...

Here is a fun tie die heart necklace just in time for Valentine's Day, not your traditional red...being non-traditional can add a little spice to the mix! This gorgeous polymer clay heart is by Elaine from Tooaquarius she makes both polymer clay beads & pendants as well as cane.

Eye, lips, nose & photos!!!

Here we go again...a mixture of things!
This time an eye, lips, a nose and my view

I like these dark blue skies...with just a hint of pink at the horizon

My first pair of lips...this is part of my first lesson for Misty Mawn's class...I had enjoyed drawing these...

Don't you just love the sun shining like this cross the water?

My first attempt to draw an eye...again for my drawing class.
I enjoyed drawing this as well...

Look at that blue sky...early fall, the leaves are just beginning to change...next year I'll do a day by day to see the colors...they are gorgeous! I've always meant to but some how I've never gotten around to it !

Finally...my attempt to draw a nose...didn't enjoy this one much...I guess I'll have to work at it because I can't draw a face without a nose!!! This one certainly won't do!!! It's alright you can chuckle...I do myself when I look at it!!!

All in all I enjoyed the drawing...this is my first attempt at any of the face parts...I've been told few artists are born, most have to practice, practice, practice in order to achieve success...I may have to add a few more practices!!!

Sunsets & Silver!!!

This may seem like an odd combination but sunsets & silver are two of my favorite things...
This photo was taken last fall...before the water was "let down"...this is done in the fall to try to prevent spring flooding in the area...for the most part it works well!

Sterling silver discs, detailed, and attached to make a wonderful statement in sterling silver!

Stamped sterling silver tear drops, from which hang purple fossil beads...

After the "let down"...I don't have a photo with all the snow...it is too darn cold...I'll have to dress warm and venture outside to get a shot of how cold and barren it looks now!

I just may keep this for myself...a gorgeous chunk of amethyst, simply wire wrapped and hung from a sterling silver chain...

On December 19th I was fortunate enough to win a great Christmas bead from ArtBeadScene Blog ...my prize is the cutest Snowman made by Jennifer Heynen, from Jangles holiday bead collection, ...it arrived yesterday and here it is below.

I think it is so cute...I'm not sure whether I will make a Christmas tree decoration or possibly a broach would be great at Christmas time!!!

Portrait Workshop with Misty Mawn!

Next I'd like to tell you about a leap of faith for me...some of you may know that I've always felt that I should be painting...I gave it a try about 10 years ago, but I didn't have the patience for it as I didn't know what I was doing...this fall I signed up for a water color class, but only attended one class as sometimes things change, I just couldn't work it in...but...I happened to see a post regarding an online art workshop, painting portraits, at a great blog I visit The Art & Life of Misty Mawn. That sounded perfect for me...I've never been interested in portraits but I'd never tried either so even if I didn't learn to love doing portraits I would learn aspects of painting, besides I felt drawn to this course, I do believe in following my instincts...so tomorrow, January 15th we begin!!!

The pencil drawings are a warm up given to all the participants...a "blind drawing"...and yes they look rather funny but drawing without looking at the paper produces the following sketches, at least from me it does...here is what we did...

Below is a self portrait

Use a photo or live model place your pencil on the paper and very slowly follow the outline of the face with your eyes at the same time draw what your eye is following...but here is the catch...without lifting your pencil!!! That made it doubly difficult for me...at first I didn't enjoy the process as I'm a bit of a perfectionist and I didn't like that the faces were all messy...funny I know!

At first it rather frustrated me so I would erase a whole face...but I reminded to go slow and enjoy the process, not worrying about the results!!! That was uncomfortable at first for me...

I did a total of three pages, and by the end I was having fun and not worrying about the face being a mess...which I'm sure was the intention of the exercise...

My grandson is the two on the right, not sure about the other two?

This is my daughter!

I'll post more as the workshop progresses...I'm excited to see how it will allow me to express myself...

Swarovki crystals, silver & a fab Shopping Spree!

Just look at all these gorgeous beads from Artbeads.com ...it was just like Christmas all over again...I do love to see the Post lady (politically correct) walking up my drive way!!!

I just love the color of these 8 mm Swarovski Crystals...they are called Indian Pink, I don't wear a great deal of pink but this color is very special, somewhat dark with a very slight hint of mauve. You have to see them to understand what I mean...

I didn't have to wait forever to get a nice sunny day to take these photos...and the color is fairly accurate...

Just look at these gorgeous Mocca 8mm crystals...I've been wanting to try this relatively new Swarovksi crystal color for some time now, I'm certainly not disappointed the color is definitly "me" , it reminds me of a smokey quartz but with sparkle ... smokey quartz is a personal favorite of mine. Don't you just love the name of the color...doesn't it sound delicious!!
Surprisingly enough this photo shows the color fairly accurately as well...I say surprisingly because I found both the Indian Pink and the Mocca to be very difficult to achieve a natural color in the photos!

Hill Tribe Bumpy Stamped Puffed Disc...(16.5mm x 17mm)now that is what I would call a mouth full...having said that these are great beads, they are generally a whiter silver...I'm a huge fan of Hill Tribe anything, the workmanship is always #1, at least from my experience...

Another great Hill Tribe bead, this one is called Hill Tribe Silver Swirled and Doted Disc Bead...(14.5mm) another mouth full but the description is accurate...

Next is a Bali Silver Flat Round Bead with Sun...(12mm x 10.5)great bead with what they are calling a sun in the middle...on my bead it looks more like a starfish, at least to me it does...which suits me just fine!!!

Here are the smallest beads in my order...they are called a Crimped Hollow Bead
6.5mm x 8.5mm) tiny in comparison to the other beads I've chosen but I like the leaf design on the bead, these would be lovely in a larger size on a silver bracelet...these are fine silver from Thailand.

To finish of my piece is a beautiful sterling silver Star Toggle from Israel...

I always like to show a photo of everything together, just to show how well they fit together...all these stunning beads are from Artbeads.com.
FYI...I do have to say the color of the crystals in this shot is a little too dark but I didn't realize that until it was time to do the post and now it is dark outside and I don't want to wait for more sun...or at the very least a bright, cloudy day...sounds like a bit of an oxymoron doesn't it...but those who like the sun to take photos will understand!!!

When I ordered these pieces I had something in mind but now I'm not so sure that is what I want to do...I'm very tempted to make myself a bracelet with dangles...those are my most favorite kind ...I generally have to have at least one dangle but I have visions of more with these beads!!!

I'll think about it...

A mixture...smokey quartz, died jade, glass, agate, turquoise and sterling silver...

For now I'm going to use this particular background...I chose the blue for Christmas as it seemed to fit the mood! Time to get back to normal!

Near the end of January I'm going to work with Cori from Scrap-E-Blog to come up with an exciting new background and header for the new year!

I'm rather fond of the color teal, but I do think I prefer the white in the center, it seems to work better with the background color I've been using for the photos... I'm sure we can come up with something that works.

I hope to have a few photos to post in the next day or so...I've just received some great silver beads and swarovski crystals from Artbeads.com...I originally knew what I was going to do with them but now that they are here I may just change my mind...

Something a little different!

I've decide to show you something other than sterling silver pieces...

Lovely silver plated filigree from which I've hung teal pearls...delicate but a nice statement!

I've been doing a bit of experimentation with copper and brass...it is fun to work with but I don't find my customers as interested in these metals as much as sterling silver and silver plated products...I searched the internet for something to finish the copper with to prevent the heavy tarnish and came across "Renaissance Micro-crystalline Wax Polish" .

I purchased the smallest container as I wasn't sure if I would like the product...
I have to admit I haven't used it yet, but from my reading I can also use it on silver to help prevent tarnish as well. I'm very careful about the chemical products I do and don't use and I couldn't find anything to state this product was not-toxic, and I didn't like the smell when I opened the container, so me being me...I emailed the company and was given the following reply...
"The blend of waxes in Renaissance is "food-grade" and safe to use, in fact we know it is used extensively by silver and copper jewelery craftsmen here in the UK and in the USA."
Once I've used the product I will let you know what I think...

To get back to business...a wavy copper bracelet...

A copper pendant, textured and curled, hanging from a silver plated chain...

A large resin pendant and earring set...the chain is silver plated...

This one is made from all wood beads with the exception for the two white and black striped beads with are resin...this has a non metal clasp, for those of you who have metal allergies!

This bracelet is made from hand crafted recycled glass beads from Africa...they have a very earthy and organic feel to them...the sterling silver square beads spell out "faith"

Red & green agate, aventurine roundels, and lead & nickle free pewter, make up this set...

I couldn't go the whole post with out at least one pair of sterling silver earrings, now could I...upside down teardrops from which I hung died purple jade dangles...

I now have a whole file of photos as I managed to take many last week, and I've been slowly resizing to list and post...here are a few pieces!

These are my Sticks...sterling silver hammered and hung from ear wires...how simple is that but you know I love to wear mine they are simple but stylish at the same time...I've also hung a bead from the bottom or hung the stick from a bead...rather versatile!

Here are Tri Sticks...no explanation required!

These are perfect for New Years...especially with a simple but elegant black dress???

Here is what I call the Open Window series...this is the second... the first and third I did somewhat differently as I cut the opening and bent back the silver to reveal the window...for this one I cut the opening with a cutter and removed the extra silver...I think I prefer the bent look, more rustic looking! I would show you the other two pendants for comparisons sake but they sold before I took a photo. This piece is sterling silver with a gorgeous British Columbia Jade teardrop wire wrapped and hanging from the window!!!

These earrings are crafted with sterling silver, the black wire wrapped dangles are one of my favorite to use onyx! Another pair perfect for New Years Eve!!!
